Easy Care Flowers

Hibiscus

This tropical beauty is a real champion of indoor-outdoor plants! Like all flowering houseplants, there are a few things you need to know, but caring for hibiscus is much easier than you would think, even in northern climates. And totally worth the effort, because not only do they clean your air and buffer sound, they look amazing and relieve stress just by looking at them.

The absolute key to healthy, blooming hibiscus is nutrition. The best way is to give them a water soluble houseplant food with every watering. Make sure the fertilizer you use specifies hibiscus! They need lower levels of nitrogen but higher levels of potassium and magnesium.

Your hibiscus will clean the air and collect dust on it’s leaves and blooms. Give your hibiscus a little bath in the kitchen sink and let it air dry.

If you want blooms, you’ll need plenty of sunlight! Be sure to keep your plant a few inches away from the window so as not to damage the leaves. If you do not have a sunny space in your home, try an LED grow light with a daylight spectrum.

Keep your hibiscus on a watering schedule. In the Upotic Planter, create a water reservoir so that roots are not standing in water and water from the bottom cup.

Pinching and pruning your plant will create more branches and a healthier, bushier plant with a greater ability to bloom. We know it’s hard but pinch those blooming branches when your plant is small!
